Counseling

Elementary school counselors play a crucial role in supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of young students. Counselors work with students to develop academic skills, set goals, and address any challenges that may impact learning. They may collaborate with teachers and parents to support student success. Counselors also assist students with immediate personal circumstances, concerns, or problems that may interfere with their healthy personal, social, education, and career development.

The school counselor assists students with developing the social and emotional skills needed to help students succeed academically.  Dogwood’s comprehensive school counseling program consists of the following components based on the the standards set by the American School Counselor Association, Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, and CASEL:

  • Guidance Curriculum- Tier one instruction that provides social emotional guidance through structured, developmental lessons to all students. Areas of focus may include: self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, and positive relationships.
  • Responsive Services- Addresses the immediate individual concerns of students. These include both emergencies and non-emergencies (e.g., academic concerns, peer concerns, abuse and/or family related concerns, suicidal ideation, coping with stress, grief. etc.).
  • Individual Planning- Assists students with establishing their goals and understanding of their own academic and social development. Areas addressed may include: study skills, communication skills, and appropriate social behaviors.
  • System Support- The administration and management required to establish, maintain, and enhance the total counseling program. Areas addressed include: teacher/administration consultation, school improvement planning, guidance program development, research, public relations, and professional development.
